Our PM Kinders made a new friend this week. Ms. Daniela noticed that there was a spider hanging in mid air from the ceiling and showed the children. Instead of screaming and running away (like I would have done) they watched as it slowly made it's way to the shelf and touched down.
"Can we keep it?" they asked. So we found her a nice home and the children decided to call her Sarah.
Over the next few days the children watched as Sarah spun a web inside her new home and we set out a few provocations to help them explore and learn all about spiders.
After their observations of Sarah, one of the children noticed that she only had 7 legs. So many of the children chose to give thier playdough spiders 7 legs instead of 8.
We talked about what spiders eat and some children thought that spiders eat grass.
"But there's snow on the ground, we can't get grass."
"I know, we can use spinach, that's like a leaf."
"Lettuce is leaves too."
We told them that spiders also eat other bugs so we played a game of "bugs" getting caught in a spider web.
We had such a great learning experience and I can only imagine what other types of creepy crawlies we'll learn about when Spring arrives.
