AM Kinders sensory play

Boy have we been busy! Our morning group is still going strong with their interest in colors and mixing and all of a sudden, Halloween...I wonder why?

So we planned some sensory experiences as well as incorporating our new interest in all things Halloween.

First we planned a sensory activity involving different foods with strong smells and tastes.

Next we planned a neighborhood Halloween scavenger hunt which ended in a little impromptu trick or treating.

After that was a fan favorite...slime!

Today we dug into some pumpkins for a full sensory experience and created some jack-o'-lanterns.

The kids had so much fun exploring this week. Can't wait to see what next week brings.

October 12 Inservice Day

We had a VERY busy day.  Our Grade 5's organized a FIFA World Cup soccer event for the children. They were divided into 4 teams: Brazil, Germany, Belgium and England(I may have been cheering the loudest for the last team...no bias 😉)

It was a real nail biter and it ended up coming down to last few seconds but Germany won 3-2 over England in the finals with Brazil coming in 3rd and Belgium taking 4th place.

In the afternoon, we planned a super cool activity for our school-aged children using hot rocks and crayons. Just by touching the crayon to the rock, it began to melt making for some pretty amazing artwork. Risky play at it's finest.

Finally, in the Mini Gym a few of our older children used basically every loose part available to create an incredible city for the group to play with. Way to go Ayan, Karam and Adam!

Kinder Music with Robyn Peters

Over the last few weeks our Kinders have been participating in a music class with Robyn Peters, a very talented music therapist. They have been learning all kinds of new songs as well as how to play a few instruments. Robyn visits us once a week and will be with us until the end of the school year.

AM Kinders Puddle Soup

Our morning kinder group had shown a real interest in the puddles when playing outside.  As we watched and listened it seemed as though they were pretending that it was soup.  So in true emergent fashion, we decided that if they wanted soup, we would make soup.

We planned a field trip to Safeway to pick our vegetables and other items that we would need to make our soup. We made our list an set out on our way.

On our walk, we experienced some of the weirdest weather you could imagine. The sun was shining and warm, there were puddles on the road, the leaves were falling from the trees and the ground was covered in snow...and boy did we have fun with that!

When we arrived at Safeway, it was straight to the produce section to look for the veggies that we needed. We gave the children a list of items and watched as they searched to find our ingredients.

"These look like potatoes"
On our search for the onions, we came across a scale and decided it would be fun to weigh some squash to see which was the heaviest.

"This one is two"

Next it was off to the grocery ailses to find the rest of our ingredients and pay for our items. We talked about the cost of each items and how much it was for everything.

This morning it was time to make our soup! We cut our vegetables and put everything in the slow cooker to be ready for our afternoon snack. Can't wait to try it!

"I cut four carrots"- Gabriela
"This is a big potato. I hope it's not french fry soup."-Gavin
"It smells like apple juice."-Mirac

What a fun filled experience with so many learning opportunities!  It's amazing what can come out of playing in puddles.
